Consolidation and Ranges
Consolidation describes a period where price moves within a relatively contained area rather than making sustained progress in either direction. A range is the area itself, bounded roughly by the highs and lows of that period.
How to read it
- The boundaries are approximate. Price commonly overshoots them slightly and returns, which is why ranges are drawn as zones.
- A narrowing range means recent bars have covered less ground, which is a direct statement about reduced volatility.
- Periods of low volatility have historically tended to be followed by periods of higher volatility. That is a statement about magnitude only, and carries nothing about direction.
What it does not tell you
- A narrowing range does not indicate which way price will subsequently move. Material presented as showing otherwise is describing selected examples.
- Ranges are identified retrospectively. While inside one, there is no way to know whether it will continue for another two days or another two months.
- What appears as consolidation on one timeframe can be a clear trend on a shorter one.
Frequently asked questions
What does consolidation mean in trading?
A period in which price stays within a relatively contained area instead of making sustained directional progress. It describes what has been happening, not what will happen next.
Does a tight range mean a big move is coming?
Volatility has been observed to cluster, so quiet periods often precede more active ones. That concerns the size of movement only and says nothing about direction, and the timing is not predictable.
How long does consolidation last?
There is no typical duration. Ranges resolve after hours or after months, and the length is only known once it has ended.

This page is educational material about how a technical tool is calculated and read. It is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy or sell anything, and not a signal service. No indicator predicts future prices. CernoQuant is a trading journal and analytics platform, not a SEBI-registered investment adviser. Trading decisions and their outcomes are yours alone.
Indicators describe the market. A journal describes you.
Knowing how RSI is calculated is the easy part. The harder question is whether you actually followed your own rules — CernoQuant reads your executed trades and measures the gap between what you intended and what you did.
