Momentum in Markets

Momentum describes the tendency for recent movement to continue over some horizon. It is measured by comparing current price to price some number of bars earlier, or through oscillators such as RSI that scale recent gains against recent losses.

How to read it

  • Positive momentum means price is above where it was N bars ago. The size of that gap indicates how pronounced the movement has been.
  • Momentum is horizon-dependent: a series can show positive momentum over months and negative momentum over days at the same moment.
  • Momentum decays. Persistence has been documented over certain horizons, but it is a tendency across many observations rather than a property of any single instance.

What it does not tell you

  • Persistence describes an average across a large sample; it says nothing reliable about the specific instrument in front of you.
  • Momentum reverses sharply and without warning, and the reversals tend to be faster than the moves that preceded them.
  • Chasing momentum late means entering after the movement that generated the signal has already occurred.

Frequently asked questions

What is momentum in trading?

The observation that recent price movement sometimes continues over a given horizon. It is measured by comparing current price with earlier price, or through oscillators that scale recent gains against recent losses.

Is momentum trading profitable?

Momentum effects have been documented in academic literature across various markets and horizons, but documented tendencies are not guarantees, and results depend heavily on costs, timing and risk control. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any strategy.

How is momentum different from trend?

They overlap considerably. Trend usually refers to sustained directional structure over time; momentum refers to the rate of recent change. A trend can persist while momentum fades.

This page is educational material about how a technical tool is calculated and read. It is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy or sell anything, and not a signal service. No indicator predicts future prices. CernoQuant is a trading journal and analytics platform, not a SEBI-registered investment adviser. Trading decisions and their outcomes are yours alone.

Indicators describe the market. A journal describes you.

Knowing how RSI is calculated is the easy part. The harder question is whether you actually followed your own rules — CernoQuant reads your executed trades and measures the gap between what you intended and what you did.
