Concept
Trend Channels
A channel is formed by two parallel lines drawn so that price movement sits between them — one along the lows, one along the highs. It summarises both the direction and the approximate width of recent movement.
How to read it
- The primary line is drawn first along the highs or lows, and the second is drawn parallel to it on the opposite side.
- The width of the channel describes how much price has fluctuated around its direction over the period drawn.
- Price leaving a channel means recent movement no longer fits the shape that was drawn. It describes the drawing becoming outdated.
What it does not tell you
- Because a channel is built from a trendline, it inherits all of that subjectivity and adds the choice of where to place the parallel.
- Price routinely exits channels briefly and re-enters, so "broken" is a judgement call rather than an observation.
- Channels are redrawn continuously as new extremes print, which makes historical charts look far more orderly than live ones.
Frequently asked questions
What is a trend channel?
Two parallel lines drawn so price movement sits between them, one following the highs and one the lows. It summarises direction and typical fluctuation width.
What does it mean when price breaks out of a channel?
That recent movement no longer fits the shape drawn earlier. It is a statement about the drawing needing revision, not an indication of what comes next.
How is a channel different from a trendline?
A trendline is a single line along one side of price. A channel adds a parallel line on the opposite side, which bounds the movement rather than just describing its direction.

Indicators describe the market. A journal describes you.
Knowing how RSI is calculated is the easy part. The harder question is whether you actually followed your own rules — CernoQuant reads your executed trades and measures the gap between what you intended and what you did.
